Ya Dee Dah 04:21
Birds dart from branch to branch Hopping up and down they dance And chirp their morning songs Asking me to sing along Their tune is fast and bright Sounds strange filled with delight If I sing their song I’ll change Their notes out of my range But a big bird I can be Sit at the base of the tree I sing low and I sing strong I sing the birds their bird song I sing their song in my key I bring out the bird in me I sing Yah dee dah Yah dee dah Yah dee dah Yah dee dah

Staring down the tunnel of time Looking for a home If I’m honest with myself With myself I’m in hell Got to wait until I’m well ’til I’m well To feel better Staring down the tunnel of time Looking for a home If I had only one wish It would be Live through this Ooooooo Staring down the tunnel of time With myself

I once had a beautiful house With fancy tile and so many windows I bought it for my little mouse Who told me she wanted a minnow We drove to a pond Out in the beyond And dove in the clearest blue water We sat in the shade And sweet love we made And now we’ve got us a daughter My beautiful house is now gone I sit on the curb and I wonder Where tonight can I sleep To be out of the rain and the thunder All the trinkets and bling They don’t mean a thing Without a sweet place to slumber And all the fast talk and lies I’d throw to the skies To go back to my house of wonder I once had a beautiful house A sweet wife and a fine daughter I gave them all up for a louse Who told me to walk on the water I made a mistake My faith it was great Believing without really seeing My fate is my fate And so my mistakes all mine So stop your agreeing!

I knew a man who danced and drew And was smarter than anyone else he knew And he became famous and had many things But he couldn’t be loved so he gave away rings A grand place he made, a mighty fortress Where he held himself against all weakness There were jewels in the windows to dazzle the eyes And gardens that reached up to the skies But as he watched the sunlight fade His loneliness a shadow made What to do, where to begin He dreads the dread of evening Night is black spreads like ink Heart is hollow glasses clink Face is flushed and tears are dry What he wants he cannot buy A grand place he made, a mighty fortress Where he held himself against all weakness There were jewels in the windows to dazzle the eyes And gardens that reached up to the skies I knew a man who danced and drew And was smarter than anyone else he knew And he became famous and had many things But he couldn’t be loved so he gave away rings Locked inside fear and need In the mind monsters breed Blinded by sorrow bright Slide into eternal night

Once my neighborhood had only bodegas Small markets that stank of rotten meat No coffee shops or restaurants Bars on the windows graffiti on the walls Streets empty after dark That was Echo Park Now there’s a coffee shop on every corner And Mom’s with strollers houses without bars Even perfectly manicured lawns Why even the graffiti is gone And that smell of rotten meet But what’s really new is the food boutique! Once ‘round suppertime that place is packed with shoppers Drooling while the owner advised on How to sauté that million dollar piece of beef And we all moaned in culinary delight When an eager woman reached the front of the line And she asked “Do you..do you have today…do you have Lesbian lasagna?” Everyone hushed And she blushed the moment the words left her lips We wondered what such a dish could be? We wondered what such a dish could be? A new kind of meat? A new way to eat? At that fancy food boutique! I want know Is there a difference between Gentrification and genderfication..? I mean there was an article in the NY Times* About, you know, the size of a man’s package And the degree of his power..like If the man’s package is hanging to the left.. Or if it’s hanging to the right.. Or if it’s short or if it’s long and thin.. Well I wanna know about a woman’s package.. I wanna know about Angela Merkel’s package.. I wanna know about AOC’s package.. I mean is it long and thin and covered with a smooth, white, creamy sauce Like a lesbian lasagna *https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/31/opinion/sunday/world-leaders-penises.html?searchResultPosition=1

Fred Hampton 04:10
Let’s all go back To not so long ago 1969 Chicago A black panther Named Fred Hampton Spoke like a prophet And the people followed him Preaching power to the people To all the brothers and sisters Cops came gunning for him They shot him dead The FBI Would not allow Fred Hampton To stir the crowd And while Fred Hampton Was fast asleep Outside was swarming With police They stormed the building Guns a blazing Shot him lying face down They shot him dead This is the land Where the cops run wild Killing all of our loved ones And never standing trial And like Fred Hampton’s Assassination The cops go free And it’s no aberration They stormed the building Guns a blazing Shot him lying face down They shot him dead

You tell me that you’re leaving in the morning Just like you said last Tuesday afternoon Got no strength for arguing, convincing you to stay, Some things end too late and others end too soon Something changed or something must’ve happened No one ever really knows just what or why There’s nothing left for me to say, there ain’t much I can do, so I’ll pull the shades and I’ll just say good by it’s just Another foggy Monday in Pacoima A heartbroken country song at best There ain’t no rest for the wicked and the weary never sleep We just find the ways and means to get it off our chest You wanted guarantees that you’d be happy But this illusion I could not provide So you found someone or something to amuse you for a-while Thanks for helping me learn to take it all in stride So I guess I’ll sit here in the darkness And contemplate the future without you Yeah I know they’ll be some sadness, but I was born a—lone Some day I will die alone, and this much still is true it’s just Another foggy Monday in Pacoima A heartbroken country song at best There ain’t no rest for the wicked and the weary never sleep We just find the ways and means to get it off our chest Please come to bed and get undressed

Darlin' you can count on me 'Till the sun dries up the sea Until then I'll always be Devoted to you I'll be yours through endless time I'll adore your charms sublime Guess by now you know that I'm Devoted to you I'll never hurt you, I'll never lie I'll never be untrue I'll never give you reason to cry I'd be unhappy if you were blue Through the years my love will grow Like a river it will flow It can't die because I'm so Devoted to you I'll never hurt you, I'll never lie I'll never be untrue I'll never give you reason to cry I'd be unhappy if you were blue Through the years my love will grow Like a river it will flow It can't die because I'm so Devoted to you

Making Toast 02:56
Traveling down a tunnel of white Tooth brush trees and blinking lights Curled up in the caboose Turning wild fast and loose Walls come apart Windows start Swinging in and out of phase Toasters and a microwave Zooming down the track Click click click clickety clack I’m wearing plastic boots Toot toot toot toot toot toot I’m ready smiling wide I got him by my side Zooming down the track Click click click clickety clack Sliding the slippery shaft Brush my cheeks against the blast Trust the rail to guide me through Hum the metal in my shoe Walls come apart Windows start Swinging in and out of phase Toasters and a microwave Zooming down the track Click click click clickety clack I’m wearing plastic boots Toot toot toot toot toot toot I’m ready smiling wide I got him by my side Zooming down the track Click click click clickety clack

Let me tell you about a friend I have All she does is cry and laugh Sometimes I think She don’t know what enough is I ask her why she acts that way She just wipes her eyes and says “well I guess you wouldn’t know But that’s the way love is.” That’s the way love is Standing on the basement steps And my feet are soaking wet Won’t somebody please Throw me my crutches The echo is a creeping doubt From a cobwebs light burnt out Oh but I guess that’s the way love is That’s the way love is You think you can’t make it alone So you trust someone Just to guide your blind feet Across the bar But if you wind up in hell Well your mirror should tell you That you know who your enemies are That’s the way love is We’ll while away the evening hours With a pistol and a bunch of flowers Trying to discover whose the toughest You know the gun’s not loaded babe And even flowers have to fade That’s the way love is That’s the way love is

Twice Today 03:23
Twice today I saw a woman cry Saw her tears heard her voice Shake and rise So her heart could tell The story of why she’s now alone Her wound still fresh Like a gash of flesh Turned crimson red As blood meets the air Still warm to touch This feeling so much Grief turns the inside out And the outside in Her language is broke Her tongue to thick to swim Through nuance with finesse Everything is meaningful And meaningless Twice today I saw a woman cry Saw her tears heard her voice Shake and rise So her heart could tell The story of why she’s now alone Grief turns the inside out And the outside in Her language is broke Her tongue to thick to swim Through nuance with finesse Everything is meaningful And meaningless Twice today I saw a woman cry Saw her tears heard her voice Shake and rise So her heart could tell The story of why’s she now alone

And it's hi ho hey, I am a bold marauder And it's hi ho hey, I am the white destroyer For I will show you silver and gold, and I will bring you treasure I will wave a widowing flag, and I will be your lover And I will show you grotto and cave and sacrificial alter And I will show you blood on the stone and I will be your mentor And night will be our darling and fear will be our name And it's hi ho hey, I am the bold marauder And it's hi ho hey, I am the white destroyer For I will take you out by the hand and lead you to the hunter And I will show you thunder and steel and I will be your teacher And we will dress in helmet and sword and dip our tongues in slaughter And we will sing a warrior's song and lift the praise of murder And Christ will be our darling and fear will be our name And it's hi ho hey, I am the bold marauder And it's hi ho hey, I am the white destroyer For I will sour the winds on high and I will soil the river And I will burn the grain in the field and I will be your mother And I will go to ravage and kill and will go to plunder And I will take a fury to wife and I will be your mother And death will be our darling and fear will be our name

about

For over twenty years, from their releases “Webaworld” to “Puttanesca,” the songwriting team of Weba Garretson and Ralph Gorodetsky has been steadily refining their craft. Since they sometimes perform as a duo, singing and playing songs, there might be an immediate tendency to lump them into the singer songwriter/folk music category, which wouldn’t be untrue, but wouldn’t be the whole truth. Some of the most interesting art in every medium has never fit into easily defined categories. While it is true that Garretson & Gorodetsky work with what could be called traditional, popular song structures, they often imbue the recognizable format of “song” with quirky, subversive elements borrowed from sources that people wouldn’t normally mix.
Garretson & Gorodetsky dance around the dictum that popular art can also be interesting and that aspects of Avant Garde (i.e. challenging art) can be popular. Imagine if Phil Ochs and John Cage went out for sonic cocktails together, or if Laura Nyro stayed up all night listening to Bartok and reading Thich Nhat Hanh.

As Greg Burk, of MetalJazz says “Garretson & Gorodetsky are urban Jazzical folklorists who turn personal encounters and musical juxtapositions into ear-tweaking multi-genre song craft”.

“The group's most basic configuration spotlighted the strengths on which they hang their fuller arrangements: imagination, tight vocal harmonies and contrapuntal interplay, with Garretson's spare keyboards bouncing off Gorodetsky's complex guitar lines. From duo to quintet, each G&G incarnation offers a vision worth seeing.”
-Greg Burk, of MetalJazz.
